I'm not a doctor, but.....

A had a fairly mild stomach bug almost two weeks ago. She was fine the next day, but started getting stomach aches daily after a couple of days. I didn't take her to the dr. right away because I figured it was left over from the initial bug. But it kept up. She's been whiny, would stop playing and lay around for a while. So I started to worry, maybe it's an infection somewhere, or acid reflux and I've been ignoring it. So today I gave up on my schedule for the day (art camp, an appointment I had) and called the doctor. They had an opening and we went in. Guess what? The doctor thinks it's left over from the initial bug. She needs to stay off dairy and eat blandly (she's 6, she always eats blandly), take it easy and it'll get better. Apparently, when you get a stomach bug, especially with kids, it upsets the digestive system (lingering inflammation, enzyme balance, etc.) and can take a while (i.e. a couple of weeks) to get back to normal. Oy. So I was right this time. After 8 years of this mom thing, I have learned a few things. Even if I started to doubt myself.

And the link to skating or derby lite? We all learn as we go. I know more about skating (and my abilities) than I did 6 months or even 6 weeks ago. I learned some cool things just last night about cornering. Live and ye shall learn. The more open we are to learning, the more that will stick with us and be there for us to use when we need it. Sometime I'll use my new cornering technique during a race or time trial. Whoosh!

The Dr. Mom thing is a scary intuition to learn. When it kicks in, whoo! watch out. But then, I'm humbled by moments when I convince the kid she's fine, and then watch her vomit during tennis lessons. Oops...call me mother of the year. Another lesson learned.
