When schedules and rentals conspire against you, you go on hiatus. That's what happened with the confluence of the beginning of school craziness (for us skaters who also have little skaties in waiting at home) and the loss of our rental space.
I'm very sad about not skating with Derby Lite at the moment. Yes, I'll keep skating (either outside or in roller rink lessons) and it'll be fun, but it won't quite be the same. Yes, I'll keep in touch with my DL pals, but again, it won't quite be the same. We may need to invent a reason to go out for margaritas, instead of just saying "well, it's Tuesday".
Mostly I'll miss DL because skating in a roller derby-esque way makes me think I can do all kinds of things I never would be willing to try in the past (for the many reasons we all have - I'm not in shape, I'm too old and getting older, I might get hurt, I might look stupid, I might fall on my butt). Well guess what? I could have told myself all of those things about 10 months ago, and for some reason I didn't, and consequently I feel younger, more in shape, etc. etc. Since then I've learned I really can jog for more than 30 seconds (not much more, but still.....), jumping off a diving board and going down the big slide at the pool is still fun (and a little scary, not to mention hysterical when you're the only adult doing it), I can skate outside (my 1990s attempts at rollerblading were not definitive) and next January , I'm going to Colorado and I'm going to try to ski. This is major.....I come from Long Island, a majorly flat sandbar and live in Chicago the flattest place on earth. I don't do hills.I skied twice in junior high....not a raging success. But what the heck? If I can jump on roller skates, why can't I snow plow down a hill (think half swizzle, skaters). So, I'm gonna do it! I need to keep skating, and jumping and swizzling to keep up my nerve though.
So I will wait (mostly patiently) for Derby Lite to come off its hiatus and maybe I'll try something new in the meantime as well!
