Callipygian
A few days ago I caught the tail end of a story on the BBC about words no longer in use. I heard "Callipygian: (ka-li-PIJ-ee-uhn) an adjective meaning ‘having shapely buttocks". And I thought, what an awesome word. I admit to being a little bit of a word geek. I can't use slang without it sounding moronic. If I ever call you "dude" you'll understand. But I can use big words when a little one will do. So whom better to practice 'callipygian' on than my skating friends. They have some of the most shapely buttocks I know. One of the many fine consequences of skating. (Not that the rest of my friends don't have shapely buttocks, but the situations in which to comment on a buttocks shape don't seem to come up so often). So, if we're skating and as you whiz by me I say, that's a very callipygian look tonight, you'll know what I mean. And thank me, or knock me down.
