Soccer Mom?

So what makes a soccer mom? Or a hockey mom, for that matter. G and A are both playing AYSO fall soccer this year (none of that crazy travel soccer stuff). I have to go to 4 games/week during the rest of September, and 2 games/week in October, plus a full soccer festival day. Oh, and two practices/week. Or is more commitment/insanity needed for the soccer mom title? Or some particular worldview? Am I disqualified because I don't have a minivan?

We had a good start to our soccer season. It was a beautiful day, partly cloudy in the low 70s (starting off in the rain or 90 degree heat is not fun). G's and A's games were not at the same time. That's always good (it's that being in two places at one time problem). G. was in the game, working hard on defense (her favorite position). It was A's first game ever. She started out in the goal.......and knew to dive onto the ball to keep the other team from the goal. I had no idea she even knew that was possible. Amazing. No one scored on her and her team won 3-1. Go Sharks!

G's team tied 5 all. And there is a huge difference between 3rd and 4th graders (G's team) and 1st and 2nd graders (A's team). By 3rd grade, kids get strategy, positioning, are fast and can kick (well some can). I'm proud because G hung in there and got to the ball.

As for my worldview, I'm glad that soccer is only 8 weeks long, am glad I'm only on snack duty once for each team, and hope that the girls have fun and learn something about soccer, teamwork and having fun. So does that make me a soccer mom? Or just mom?

It's really all just preparation for roller derby anyway, right?

Perhaps it's time to consider starting a junior roller derby league. Teach fitness, skating skills and the game, not altogether unlike Derby Lite! There are junior leagues starting to pop up all over the country as of late. Food for thought!
