I started roller skating, doing recreational roller derby (Derby Lite) in December 2007. I was introduced to a world of women who are not afraid of lingerie, falling down, or of making new friends. Lucky me. I think combined with meditation, (which is an odd combination I know) Derby Lite has changed my outlook on life.
Today I was supposed to go to the beach for a half hooky day beach party with a bunch of D'liters at the beach rental home of Queen B, the diva of Derby Lite. But lo and behold, I had indigestion that made me think I might be dying (literally) and out of no where, A. my six year old, threw up right before bed last night. WTF? Is it a stomach bug, too much sun, not enough something? OY. Beach day was off. But we all felt better this morning so A and I went to the zoo while G, who is 8, was at theater camp. And because I felt bad about not getting to the beach we are going to the pool tonight from 6:30-8. Going out at night with children is pretty unusual for me so I feel pretty adventurous.
Now for derby as a metaphor for life. You're up for the scrimmage, take a hard block (or in my case a couple of unhappy tummies) fall down, and get back up to skate again. Now that's something I can use.
