Last night Mr. Doll and I were going out to dinner as a father's day present (it was a long planned reservation at Topolobampo, a Chicago dining staple), and I was getting dolled up, putting on more complex eye makeup than usual. Mascara, thicker eyeliner, heavier eye shadow, and I decided to put on my reading glasses on to see how it was looking. And boom, I realized I've been putting on eye makeup without glasses, and I have no idea how my makeup really looks, because I can't actually see. It was quite an eye opener, so to speak. I've become one of those people who is always pulling out reading glasses because I can't read or do anything close up without them (which has been annoying after my previous 20/20 vision) . And I realized I may have been walking around with makeup askew having no idea what I look like (or where my wrinkles are)......this makes me feel old. (I bought a magnifying mirror today).
Today Derby Lite had an outdoor skate. I skated 8 miles. A couple of hardier (and faster girls) skated 10 miles. It was wonderful, not too hot, not too hard, beautiful asphalt, some nice hills a beautiful park, and great company. We timed it at six minute miles at a fast pace, I was probably between 7 and 10 depending on the loop. Not a bad workout. Could I have skated 8 miles a year ago? Absolutely not. Does it give me a sense of physical accomplishment? YES.
So as I finish this post and take off my reading glasses, I realize that despite everything that says I'm getting older, I am not yet Old. Not while I can find new and fun things to do. Not while I can skate. Wheeee!
