How much fun can you have with a kid? Earlier today A and I cleaned out my car. She wanted help cleaning her room (which I did not mess up) and I told her if she helped me with the car, I'd help her with her room. Deal!
She vacuumed the car, took out the car seats, and helped clean the seats and the trim. She had so much fun that she asked to do Ken Doll's car as well! So we cleaned the interior of both cars. It was actually great fun working with her and she did a great job. She really liked the vacuum! I could see her realize that with a little effort we could make a big difference. She made sure that Ken Doll (whose car is not really messy but had about an inch of dust in it) came out to see her handiwork. She was very proud of her accomplishment, as was I.
I had an ah-ha moment as I experienced that working together with your child can be good for everyone. I know people say that, but I don't experience it very often. Usually I'm grumpy that it took so long for everyone to join in, or cranky at the extent of the disaster I've drafted them to help clean up, or the girls run off at the very first opportunity. So this really was fun. And my car is de-gunked in the process. Hurray for teamwork!
